All right you can open it up with 2007 but make sure it is being saved as .doc (2003 format) on the save as screen.

If you already own a copy of Office 2003, you can just uninstall Office 2007 (blech) and reinstall Office 2003. If you never had Office 2003 before, you will need to buy a copy. The cheapest I saw was for the Student and Teacher Edition -- it was $160. You probably don't NEED to buy this though; just download OpenOffice.org from here:
http://www.openoffice.org/
and install. It is a free (and legal!) Office suite that is designed to be a comfortable and familiar alternative to Microsoft Word users. Did I mention it's free?
you don't need 2003, 2007 will read 2003 but when you save you need to make sure to save as file type for the older version its called retro saving. If your trying to open it but not seeing it then look at the bottom bar and click the drop down menu and select all files
There is an option somewhere in 2007 which tells it to only display and use things compatible with 2003, so that you have no problems when opening your files at school.
All Office products are backward compatible. Word 2007 will open a word 2003 Doc. but not always the other way around. When you save your doc. @ home "save as" word.doc 2003 by scrolling within the save as box till you see .doc 2003 or something similar.
