I have microsoft works suite 2006 installed on my PC. I would like to upgrade to full microsoft office, easily and cheaply please

No sorry you can't do this. Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office are two different programs. However you can run them side by side. Also you might want to look into OpenOffice. It's free and works just as good as Microsoft Office. http://www.openoffice.org God Bless and Merry Christmas.

Yes you can. As long as your work is saved. When you save your files, they are their own individual files, so upgrading, even deleting the Microsoft Works / Office program will not affect them. The same way you can put the files on a cd or memory card and bring it from one computer to another. You must have the program in order to open and edit them though.
Just download Open Office, it's virtually identical to MS Office and it's free! You should be able to open your current Works files there with no problem.
If you mean not losing your files, you can. It may not be necessary to back up your files, but you can to be safe.
